(Global Messenger, Gary Fuller, shares his story during the 2015 State Summer Games Press Conference)
Special Olympics Athlete Leadership is training program that allows athletes to explore Special Olympics participation in roles off the field of play. Such participation might come in the form of an athlete serving on the Board of Directors, an Area Management Team, or as a spokesperson, team captain, coach, official, or media specialist.
Athletes in Montana have been training as Global Messengers for the past five years. Global Messenger training continues to be available. As a result, we now have a growing team of experienced and enthusiastic athlete speakers statewide who speak regularly to a wide variety of groups and organizations. To see if a Global Messenger is available to speak at your event, call the Special Olympics Montana office at 406-216-5327 and ask for the Vice President of Field Services, Jamie Wood.
With recent expansion of the Athlete Leadership program, Montana’s athletes are gaining experience as leaders in other ways, as well. Training courses include:
Introduction to Athlete Leadership Program
Athletes on Board of Directors (Governance)
Athletes as Coaches or Officials
Athletes Assisting in Fundraising
Athlete Input Councils
If athletes are interested in becoming Global Messengers, please contact the Vice President Outreach, Mandy Patriarche, 406-216-5327.
