Athlete Leadership

Leadership Definition

Development of athlete leaders is supported by the Special Olympics Unified Leadership approach. Building from sport, such an approach teaches leaders of all abilities to value and learn from each other and to create environments where people with intellectual disabilities succeed in meaningful jobs and roles.

Our Athlete Leadership Program

Special Olympics Montana has launched a statewide initiative in summer 2020  to train our 50th Anniversary Athlete Ambassadors. These Athlete Ambassadors have been given the opportunity to choose which leadership position they prefer. We currently have 48 Athlete Ambassadors who have chosen to be trained as Athlete Input Council Members, Development Messengers, or Health Messengers. Stay tuned for opportunities to learn from them all as we move to being an “athlete led” movement.

Our 2020 Athlete Leadership Trainings are available to watch online! Don’t sweat if you missed one training. Tune in and watch them anytime. Complete the homework after the training and turn it into Nancy Undercofler at
