SOMT State Basketball Tournament returns to Butte

Volunteer and sponsor opportunities now available

BUTTE — The Special Olympics Montana State Basketball Tournament will be returning to Butte in November of 2019 for a three-year run through 2021.  The 2019 tournament will be held November 7th – 9th.

More than 700 athletes, 180 coaches and chaperones, plus hundreds of families and friends from across Montana will attend to watch the athletes compete in two days of intense basketball competition.  Multiple venues in Butte and Ramsay will host competition, including 3-on-3 teams, 5-on-5 teams, 5-on-5 Unified teams, and Individual Skills contests.

It takes more than 500 volunteers to put on the State Basketball Tournament. Special Olympics Montana will work with businesses, organizations and community leaders to recruit these volunteers from the local community.

Already, a group of more than 25 volunteers, called the Games Management Team, is working to plan all facets of the tournament from competition, to providing food and housing for the athletes and their coaches.

Special Olympics Montana is currently recruiting volunteers for the State Basketball Games. Those interested in volunteering should visit to register online, or contact Jamie Wood at (406) 315-4194 or

Donors and sponsors are crucial to the execution of the tournament.  Special Olympics Montana is proud to announce that Town Pump has graciously agreed to support the tournament as the premier sponsor.  Other key sponsors identified to date include NorthWestern Energy, Transystems, and the Butte Silver Bow TBID, with many others cuing up their support.

Businesses or individuals interested in sponsorship opportunities should contact Wendy Rispens at (406) 315-4202 or

Games attendees will be able to follow the tournament through the Special Olympics Montana mobile app which can be downloaded to iOS devices at the App Store and for Android at the Google Play store.
